Public funding is decreasing and becoming more competitive to access. Operational costs are rising across the board. Margins are extremely tight whilst freelancers and creatives are attempting to navigate the cost of living crisis.
Old funding models are not fit for the realities of the sector. Towns, cities and local places need to have new conversations about how culture and creativity affects their future, from quality of life to wellbeing to growth and attracting investment.
My work has laid the foundations for new funding streams which help the sector adapt to new realities:

Bristol Music Fund
Client: Bristol City Council / Bristol Nights
I led a feasibility study with PRD into a new method of financial support for grassroots music in Bristol. The proposed model is a locally-generated, self-sustaining fund via a small ticket fee. The fund’s aims and governance were co-designed with the sector, with a recommendation to establish a Community Benefit Society.
Bristol Cultural Investment Model
Client: Bristol City Council
I led a study with BAS Consultancy and EW Associates responding to proposed cuts to council cultural funding. We assessed over 25 funding sources and demonstrated the risks of replacing unrestricted funding. The report is expected to be shared in late 2025 or early 2026.
